How Did That Get In My Lunchbox? (#27)

How Did That Get In My Lunchbox?

by Chris Butterworth & Lucia Gaggiotti

"One of the best parts of a young child’s day is opening a lunchbox and diving in. But how did that delicious food get there? From planting wheat to mixing dough, climbing trees to machine-squeezing fruit, picking cocoa pods to stirring a vat of melted bliss, here is a clear, engaging look at the steps involved in producing some common foods."

Before diving right in and reading this book to unengaged children ask them to first think about their favorite common food and how it is picked, produced, or manufactured in order for to be readily available for them to eat.

Ask children to make a list of the steps of a diagram of how the food is produced.
Apple Juice (there is also a whole machine in the process that mashes, squishes, and squeezes the juice from the picked apples)

Wheat for Bread

Yummy Juicy Clementines!

Cocoa for Chocolate

After allowing time for the children to think and explore possibilities read the book How Did That Get In My Lunchbox? Ask children if they were correct in how they thought the food was produced. Have children edit or make new lists or diagrams showing the entire process of how food is grown, produced, and delivered.
