Halitosis: chronic bad breath – is something that mints, mouthwash or a good brushing can’t solve. Unlike “morning breath” or a strong smell that lingers after a tuna sandwich, halitosis remains for an extended amount of time and may be a sign of something more serious.

Morning Breath: During the day, you swallow, talk, and drink liquids that wash the bacteria and food particles down your throat to your stomach. When you sleep, your mouth stays quiet. Bacteria feasts on the food particles and leaves behind waste during the night. When you wake up, you taste and smell the results of the bacteria in your mouth.

Causes of Bad Breath Include:

  • Bacteria build up
  • Dental issues
  • Dry mouth
  • Eating certain foods
  • Medications
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Mouth, Nose and Throat Infections
  • Medical illnesses

Stinky Breath as a result of food does not come from your mouth, Onion and garlic breath comes from the lungs. The foods go from your stomach to your intestines, then passes through the intestine walls and enters the bloodstream. When the blood reaches your lungs, you breath out flavored gas.

Fight and Control Bad Breath:
  • Brush your teeth & tongue at least twice a day & Floss at least once
  • Use mouthwash
  • Dental check ups twice a year
  • Chew sugar free gum
  • Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water
  • Limit caffeine and stinky food intake

We want to start kids off young with correct healthy habits so that they can grow up and continue using those healthy habits into adulthood.

Activities to do with young children:
Practice Flossing

Or brushing with giant Lego blocks
  • Implement tooth brushing at the table instead of the sink. Check this link! https://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/video/steps-toothbrushing-table-growing-healthy-smiles-early-care-education-programs
  • Soak eggs in coffee or root beer, have children practice brushing them, and talk about why we brush our teeth
  • Make a chart about healthy choices and not healthy choices for your teeth.
  • Check to see if you have bad breath: Wash your hand, and then lick the back of it with the farthest back part of your tongue. Then let it dry for 10 seconds and smell it. If you discover that it does smell bad there are a number of things you can do to improve it.
